During my winter holiday, I also visited
Kyoto. In Kyoto, kaiseki-style cooking is known as
Kyoto cooking, so I wanted my partner to enjoy a traditional Japanese dining
experience. But, kaiseki meals are often very expensive.
A good kaiseki meal usually costs around 10,000 yen per person, and prices can
go as high as 30,000 yen or as low as 6000 yen. It is a bit over budget to spend on one
meal.
Then, my Japanese friend who lives
in Paris told me that she went to a kaiseki restaurant in Paris. She said “kuzushi kaiseki” that breaks the traditional rules, which was not a traditional kaiseki-style cusine. So to say
it was casual-style kaiseki. The one she went was called “Giro-Giro” and
she also mentioned to me that there would be the main branch of the same restaurant
in Kyoto. I originally thought that we could go there, but when I was surfing the Internet to find more
information, I happened to find another “kuzushi kaiseki” restaurant in Kyoto.
It is run by a married couple, the husband
used to work in Giro-Giro and he just opened his own restaurant with his wife in
March 2013.
It is a tiny restaurant that is 20 square
meters and has only six seats by the counter, which is located in Gion, Kyoto’s
famous Geisha district. The restaurant is called “Yoshi Yoshi.” Both
the husband and wife’s names include Yoshi and this was how they named their
restaurant “Yoshi Yoshi.”

It sounded very attractive and more homely. I decided to
book seats for our dinner there. They only serve one course menu that changes
every month. These are the dishes that we had on that
day.

They only have 6 seats by the counter so
that we could see the chef in action through the course. Each dish was not a big portion, but we
were full by the end of the meal. We
started eating from 19:30 and finished at around 22:00. We really enjoyed the chef’s food and
performance. The food at Yoshi Yoshi was exquisite in both flavor and
presentation. The nine-course menu followed a traditional
Kaiseki sequence of preparation styles, but maybe a little modified at chef’s
discretion. I did not really think that it was casual. It was rather good enough to experience a real Japanese culinary adventure.
This prix-fixe menu is value for money and
costs just 4,730 yen (inclusive of tax). We also had two types of hot sake (rice wine) and a common single serving size of sake is equal to 180 ml.
Our drinks were under 3,000 yen and of course
Japanese teas were served free of charge.
It has not been popular yet like Giro-Giro, but it is recommended
to book for your seats in advance. If you don’t understand Japanese, I
recommend you ask someone who can translate to accompany you there because food
descriptions are difficult.
